How to Grow on Instagram: A Practical Plan for Small Businesses

Instagram is still one of the best places for a small business to be seen. It is visual, it is where many customers discover local shops, restaurants and services, and it makes it easy for people to message you directly. But growing an account takes more than posting a nice photo now and then.

This guide gives you a practical plan: how Instagram decides what to show, how to set up your profile, which formats to use, how to grow with original content and a simple 30-day plan to get started.

How Instagram decides what to show

Instagram does not use one single algorithm. It ranks content differently in the Feed, Reels, Stories and Explore, based on what each person is likely to enjoy. But according to Instagram’s own explanations, a few signals matter most — both for people who already follow you and for people who do not.

  • Watch time — do people stop scrolling and keep watching your Reel?
  • Likes — how many of the people who saw your post liked it (often measured as likes per reach).
  • Sends — how often people share your post with friends in direct messages (sends per reach). This is a strong signal that your content is genuinely useful or entertaining.

Instagram has also said that it favours original content. Videos reposted with another app’s watermark, or content copied from other accounts, are less likely to be recommended. Finally, make sure your account is in good standing — you can check this in your Instagram settings under Account Status.

Step 1: Optimise your profile

Your profile is your shop window. When someone discovers one of your posts and taps your name, they decide in a few seconds whether to follow you or contact you.

  1. Use a business or creator account. It gives you insights, contact buttons and other business features. Switching is free in your account settings.
  2. Use the name field well. The name field (separate from your @username) is searchable. Add what you do or your city: “Your Bakery · Oran”.
  3. Write a clear bio. Say what you offer, for whom and what the next step is: “Fresh bread & custom cakes every morning · Order 24h ahead for celebrations”.
  4. Add the right link. Link to a page that matches your offer — an order page, a booking page or a simple landing page. Our guide to landing pages that convert explains how to build one.
  5. Turn on contact buttons — message, call, email or directions — so people can reach you in one tap.
  6. Create Story Highlights for the questions people ask most: prices, examples of your work, reviews and location.

Step 2: Use each format for its job

Instagram offers several formats, and each one is good at something different. Using all three together gives you the best results.

Reels: reach new people

Reels are short vertical videos and are the main way to reach people who do not follow you yet. Keep them focused, start with a strong first second, add captions for people watching without sound and post original videos — not reposts from other apps. Instagram has recommended keeping Reels to three minutes or less if you want them to be eligible for recommendations.

Carousels: get saves and shares

Carousels are posts with several images or slides that people swipe through. They are excellent for step-by-step tips, checklists, price lists and before-and-after comparisons — content people want to save or send to a friend.

Stories: build relationships

Stories disappear after 24 hours and are mostly seen by people who already follow you. Use them for daily, casual updates: today’s offer, behind-the-scenes moments, polls, questions and reposts of customers who tag you.

Step 3: Create original content people want to share

Because sends are such an important signal, ask yourself before every post: “Would someone send this to a friend?” Content that gets shared usually does one of these things:

  • Teaches something useful — “3 mistakes to avoid when choosing…”.
  • Shows a satisfying result — a transformation, a finished project, a before-and-after.
  • Is relatable — a situation your customers recognise and smile at.
  • Answers a real question your customers ask you every week.

Film your own videos, use your own photos and show your real business. If you also post on TikTok, upload a clean version of your video without the TikTok watermark. Our comparison of Instagram Reels and TikTok explains how to use one video on both.

Test ideas with Trial Reels

Instagram offers a feature called Trial Reels that shows a Reel to people who do not follow you first. It is a useful way to test a new idea with a fresh audience before sharing it with your followers. If a trial performs well, you can share it more widely.

Write captions that work

A strong first line, one clear idea and one call to action make a big difference. See our guide to writing social media captions for a simple formula and templates.

Step 4: Engage like a real business

  • Reply to comments and messages quickly. Conversations build trust, and many sales on Instagram happen in direct messages.
  • Collaborate. Use Instagram’s collab posts to publish one post together with another local business or creator, so it appears to both audiences.
  • Tag your location on posts and Reels, and use a few relevant local hashtags to help nearby customers find you.
  • Repost your customers. When customers tag you in Stories, share them (with a thank-you). It is free, honest social proof.

Step 5: Measure what matters

Open your Insights once a week and look beyond follower count. For each post, check:

  • Reach — how many people saw it, and how many were not followers.
  • Average watch time for Reels.
  • Shares, saves and likes compared with reach.
  • Profile visits, link clicks and messages — the actions that turn into customers.

Each month, find your three best posts and make more content like them. Plan it in a content calendar so you stay consistent.

Your 30-day Instagram plan

  • Week 1 — Set up: fix your name field, bio and link, create four Highlights and plan twelve post ideas.
  • Week 2 — Publish: post three Reels and one carousel, share Stories on most days and reply to every comment.
  • Week 3 — Test: try two Trial Reels, publish one collab post with a partner and tag your location on every post.
  • Week 4 — Learn: check sends and watch time, repeat your three best ideas in new ways and plan next month.

Mistakes that hold accounts back

  • Buying followers, likes or views. It breaks Instagram’s rules and damages your real reach. We explain why in this article.
  • Follow/unfollow tricks and “engagement groups”. They bring the wrong people and can put your account at risk.
  • Reposting watermarked videos from other apps.
  • Only posting advertisements. Teach, show and entertain first.
  • Posting a lot for two weeks, then disappearing. Consistency beats intensity.
  • Ignoring messages. A slow reply can mean a lost customer.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a small business post on Instagram?

A realistic starting point is three to four feed posts or Reels per week, plus Stories on most days. Choose a rhythm you can keep for months.

Do hashtags still matter?

They help a little with categorisation and local discovery, but much less than strong, original content. Use a few relevant hashtags instead of long lists.

How long does it take to grow?

It varies, but most businesses see steady progress after a few months of consistent, useful content. One post can perform unexpectedly well, but long-term growth comes from a routine.

Should I run Instagram ads?

Ads can speed things up, especially to promote a post that already performs well organically. Start with a small budget and a clear goal, such as messages or website visits.

Summary

Growing on Instagram comes down to a few clear principles: a profile that explains what you do in seconds, original Reels to reach new people, carousels that get saved and shared, Stories that build relationships, fast replies and a weekly look at the numbers that matter. Follow the 30-day plan, keep what works and stay consistent.
