10 On-Page SEO Basics Every Website Owner Should Know

Search engine optimisation (SEO) sounds technical, but most of what helps a small website rank is simple: make each page clearly about one topic, make it useful, and make it easy to load and read. Here are ten basics you can check today.

1. One main topic per page

Each page should answer one main question or target one main search phrase. If a page tries to rank for everything, it usually ranks for nothing.

2. Write a clear title tag

The title tag is the blue link people see in Google results. Put the main topic near the start, keep it under about 60 characters, and make it attractive to click. Every page needs a different title.

3. Write a helpful meta description

The meta description is the short text under the title in search results. It does not directly change rankings, but a clear description that matches the search can increase clicks.

4. Use headings in order

Use one H1 (the page title), then H2 headings for main sections and H3 for sub-points. Headings help readers scan the page and help search engines understand its structure.

5. Write for people, not for keywords

Use your main phrase naturally in the title, the first paragraph and a heading — then forget about it and focus on answering the question better than anyone else. Repeating a keyword again and again makes text hard to read and does not help.

6. Make your site fast

  • Compress images and use modern formats such as WebP.
  • Remove plugins and scripts you do not use.
  • Use caching (most hosts and WordPress caching plugins make this easy).

You can test your pages for free with Google PageSpeed Insights.

7. Make it work perfectly on phones

Most visitors browse on mobile, and Google primarily uses the mobile version of your site. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap, and nothing is wider than the screen.

8. Use HTTPS

A security certificate (the padlock in the address bar) protects your visitors and is expected by both browsers and search engines. Most hosting providers offer a free certificate.

9. Link your pages together

Internal links help visitors find related content and help search engines discover all your pages. When you write a new article, link to one or two older related pages — and link back from them.

10. Describe your images

Give images descriptive file names and alt text that explains what the image shows. This helps visually impaired visitors using screen readers and helps your images appear in image search.

Bonus: submit your site to Google Search Console

Google Search Console is free. It shows which searches bring people to your site, which pages are indexed, and any problems Google finds. Add your sitemap there — WordPress creates one automatically at /wp-sitemap.xml.
